"Fill Your Cup First"
Introduction:
I came across this picture on Facebook and want to share my interpretation. Giving is a noble gesture in showing how we care and value our family or loved ones. The Filipino culture of gift-giving, known as "pasalubong" or sharing blessings with others, is common, especially among those working abroad or who have a stable income.
Aside from this, if you are the breadwinner of the family, you work too hard to be a provider that you often overwork and feel burnt out. In reality, you don't have to give till nothing is left for you, not only material things but also your physical well-being.
Overview:
"Fill your cup first" is widely used as an idiomatic expression or metaphor. It means prioritizing self-care and ensuring your own emotional, mental, and physical needs are met before attempting to help or care for others.
The expression is often paired with the related saying, "you can't pour from an empty cup." The idea is that if you are completely drained or burnt out, you have nothing left to give to others sustainably or healthily.
If we analyze the picture below, doing the five steps will fill your cup of well-being. You won't feel drained, and when your cup is full, you can share your blessings with family, relatives, and close friends.

Here are the 5 steps for Self-care:
1. "Do something that brings you joy." 😍
- Listening to music or a podcast during your commute to work relieves stress when you experience traffic.
- Call a friend you haven't spoken to, either from high school or college, and catch up on your shared memories.
- Volunteer your time to a cause you care about, such as the elderly, an orphanage, or the strays.
- Do random acts of kindness to neighbors.
2. "Get some fresh air."
In today's technology, we are constantly on our phones, whether work-related or just browsing social media posts.
- Take some time off by walking or jogging in your neighborhood or a park to get some fresh air.
- Set a schedule each weekend to have a worthwhile outdoor activity with family or friends.
- Get physically active. Try swimming or biking for a change.
3. "Write down what you are grateful for." ✍
- Start a journal and write down 3 to 5 things you are grateful for daily.
- When things are looking down, you can browse the journal for positive inspiration.
- A journal is therapeutic for our mental well-being, and focusing on the good things will attract positive energy.
4. "Practice self-care."
- Treat yourself to a spa day, relax, and enjoy your day off to recharge because you deserve it.
- Get enough sleep; at least seven to eight hours is sufficient for good health.
- Be consistent with your sleep schedule. Remove electronic devices that deprive you of sleep.
- Don't skip breakfast. It's the most important meal of the day. Chew your food well.
- Keep healthy snacks around and drink lots of water.
5. "Learn something new." 📚
- Schedule a day to learn a new dance step. It is a great workout for the body.
- Try to learn a new language. Learning a different language will keep our minds active.
- Set aside an hour every day off for an online course to develop your skills.

Remember:
Self-care is not being selfish; it is essential. We have to take care of ourselves first to share our blessings. Sometimes, we overdo giving and neglect ourselves in the process.
Replenish your energy by engaging in activities to restore your energy and well-being, whether it's rest, a hobby, or quiet time. By filling your own cup, you ensure you have the energy and resources to support others effectively, allowing your kindness to "overflow" naturally.
